The Secrets of the Land, the Whispers of the Sea
The relationship between Eastern and Western histories and narratives has always been a continuous thread in my thinking and artistic practice. In these new works, I explore concepts of absurdity and collage in three-dimensional space, using found objects and material from my personal archive—similar to the subversive images previously created in two-dimensional collage form in my series of the Goddesses of the wild Orient*. This method pays homage to the Dada and Surrealist artists of the early 20th century, who favoured these experimental approaches.
The sculptures are housed within cabinets, drawing inspiration from both traditional museum "cabinets of curiosity" and domestic display furniture—such as those used to showcase Objets d'art ,fine china, figurines, and family heirlooms. This setting plays with the tension between the public and private, the curated and the sentimental.
